RETURN TO THE REPUBLIC: Sunday, March 2

Celebrate Texas Independence Day on hallowed ground, where Republic of Texas President Mirabeau Lamar once proclaimed Austin as the new capital, where the native Tonkawa Indians once camped as they served as Republic scouts, where herds of longhorn cattle once headed north on the storied Chisholm Trail and where diverse generations of early Texas settlers once put down Lone Star roots.

Come see how the early settlers lived, in their original cabins and houses. See their wagons and carriages. And see our new exhibits and activities that will provide you with plenty to do, providing fun for all ages. No place else in Austin can you experience Texas history where it occurred like you can at Pioneer Farms.

And what better day to visit than on Texas Independence Day, on the day in 1836 when Texans signed their Declaration of Independence from Mexico, when a fledgling nation was formed that would grow into a powerhouse modern state — rich in both a legendary history and a tireless can-do spirit.

The historic breakaway declaration was prepared overnight as the Alamo was under siege, and was signed by 59 delegates assembled at Washington-on-the-Brazos. Similar to the United States Declaration of Independence, the Texas document focused on the rights of citizens to “life” and “liberty” but with an emphasis on the “property of the citizen.”

Saddle up and come on out! This will be a great day to step back in time and see what Old Texas was really like!
