Youth Blacksmithing Ages 14 To 17
Designed especially for homeschool and flex-schedule learners ages 14–17, this beginner-friendly blacksmithing class gives students the chance to experience the excitement of working at a real forge in a safe, structured environment. Each 2-hour class introduces students to basic blacksmithing tools and techniques while building confidence, focus, and problem-solving skills. Students will learn how metal moves under heat, how to use a hammer with control, and how simple techniques can shape raw steel into something useful and memorable.
Each class centers on a hands-on project that students will complete and take home the same day. Along the way, they will practice patience, craftsmanship, and shop safety while enjoying a creative experience that feels both historic and empowering. No prior experience is needed — just curiosity, a willingness to learn, and clothes suitable for workshop activities.
Dragon Pendant / Backpack Hanger
In this creative blacksmithing class, students will forge a dragon-inspired pendant or backpack hanger from steel and leave with a finished piece that is both wearable and full of character. Using graceful scrollwork and simple shaping techniques, students will learn how to move hot metal, form tight decorative curls, and create a small project with a striking fantasy feel. This class is a great fit for young makers who enjoy dragons, medieval themes, and hands-on craftsmanship, and each student will take home a unique forged piece they can wear, display, or clip onto a bag.
Horseshoe Butter Knife
In this beginner-friendly blacksmithing class, students will transform a real horseshoe into a butter knife they can take home and use. Over the course of the class, they will learn foundational forging skills such as heating, bending, flattening, and shaping steel while working safely in a supervised shop environment. This project is a fun introduction to blacksmithing because it turns an everyday object into something surprising, useful, and memorable, giving students a finished piece that blends creativity, craftsmanship, and practical function.
