Metalwork Merit Badge
This fast-paced introductory class qualifies students to complete the Boy Scout Metalwork merit badge. Teaches basic hammer skills, basic ways to work metal with forging, bending and decorative twists, with a small project. Safety training included. Minimum class size 3 students, Class sizes are limited to 12 students total
For safety this class may require adult volunteers depending on the class size. The adult volunteers do not need to have any blacksmithing experience. They will be responsible for helping to ensure the students are being safe, staying on track, and helping reinforce the instructors lessons. An adult responsible for the scouts must remain on the property during the class. No exceptions.
1-4 students: no additional adult volunteers required at class
5-8 students: 1 additional adult volunteer must be present at class
9-12 students: 2 additional adult volunteers must be present at class
Classes are not taught during summer months due to heat limitations on youth programs.
Instructor: Lead Smith Philip Waters or a Scout-qualified smith
Location & Duration: The Village Smithy, 4 hours
Materials: All materials provided
Enrollment & Refunds
Enrollment must be completed at least one week before the class date.
No refunds are offered once the enrollment fee has been received.
If a student cannot attend, they may reschedule once on a space-available basis. To reschedule, students must contact us in writing before the class begins at info@pioneerfarms.org. No exceptions.
Prerequisites
No experience necessary
What to Wear
A cotton or other natural-fiber shirt (long sleeves optional)
Long pants or jeans
Work boots or closed-toe shoes
What to Bring
Safety glasses (required)
Hearing protection (optional)
Water (at least 1 gallon in the summer)
Sack lunch (classes include a 30-minute break)
Gourmet sandwiches, chips, and drinks are available for purchase in the General Store.
Age Requirements
Class is designed for ages 15–17 who may enroll if a parent or legal guardian signs the attendance release form at the start of class.
Ages 12–14 may enroll only if a parent or legal guardian also enrolls in and attends the class with them. No exceptions.
