1800s HUNTING CAMP: Saturday, February 10

Experience an 1800s hunting camp exhibit that will allow visitors to see how early-day settlers to Central Texas lived off the land, sometimes for a few weeks and sometimes for months — even years — at a time.

Back then, the only way to eat was to catch or shoot dinner, a common lifestyle among men and women living on the frontier, unlike today when rustle up most of our grub at the grocery store. Wild game was not a delicacy, it was the norm.

The Outriders history reenactment group will offer a special program highlighting a time during the 1800s when Texans engaged in seasonal hunting to supplement their diets and their wallets. It could be a tough life, especially in the winter months, but one that ingrained hunting in the psyche of Texans for generations all the way up to day.

The gates open at 10 a.m. Members are admitted for free.
